The City of Covington has identified a growing need for aquatics and recreation services that will soon outpace their existing aquatics facility’s capacity. In partnership with ARC, this feasibility study determines the best path forward for increasing their facilities to meet those upcoming needs. Community members were engaged at local events over the duration of the study and showed great interest in a center that would provide new and improved activities for their families. Building upon this information gathered through three public opinion surveys, as well as engineers’ assessments of the city’s existing aquatics center, development at the city’s future town center site was favored over attempting to expand the existing facility.
The town center site will become the city’s civic and community focal point, hosting both this future aquatics and recreation center, as well as the city hall. This location provides ample opportunity for pedestrian-friendly outdoor plazas of different scales and amenities, including potential water features and public art. The building configuration establishes two main entrances from the north and south plazas increasing access for visitors coming from both the future parking lot and Founders Park across the street.
