Drawing design inspiration from longhouse architecture, the Elder Center celebrates the Puyallup Tribe’s culture and tradition. Elders enter through a low cedar vestibule with carved wood sculptures and custom doors glazed in a chevron pattern. The interior of the building features the “Hall of Elders,” defined by art-filled display cabinets beneath a wood-slatted ceiling.

Careful site planning allowed for the creation of a campus green space with Spirit Garden that commemorates tribal ancestors. A water feature runs through the Spirit Garden representing the nearby Puyallup River. From the building entry, a tall window frames the view of the Spirit Garden beyond, inviting pause and reflection.

For the well-being of the Elders, the facility includes gathering spaces, classrooms, art rooms, banquet facility, library, health and wellness center with hydrotherapy pool, and massage and exercise rooms.  The building is designed to LEED Certified standards and includes a 12,000 sf green roof.

In 2015- 2018, ARC designed the Elder Housing Assisted Living addition to the east.
