UW Center for Pediatric Dentistry

seattle, wa

A historic naval building finds new life as a state-of-the-art pediatric dental clinic and research and training facility. The facility is a partnership between the University of Washington School of Dentistry and Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center, providing oral health services to pediatric patients, many of whom are low-income families.  Building 25 is an Art Deco structure constructed in 1936, and the historic renovation was approved by the State Historic Preservation Office.

Owner:

University of Washington

Square Footage:

28,000 SF

Completion:

2010

This adaptive reuse project included a complete overhaul of the building systems that had sat derelict for over 20 years. The exterior façade of the building was cleaned and the brick veneer was seismically pinned to the structure. Extensive interior demolition, hazardous materials abatement, seismic and ADA upgrades made way for a reassuring and safe place for children to receive dental services.

The design and layout create a prototype for future pediatric dental care clinics. The challenge of existing low floor-to-floor dimensions was solved with creative shaping of ceilings and the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) during construction to integrate the installation of mechanical, electrical and technology systems within the existing structural shell.

The rehabilitation of this historic property brought new life to this central facility, with new windows, roofing and flashing, restored original light fixtures, and wood entry doors.
